Williamson County Shares Its Story—and Its Vision for the Region

Nearly 80 community, business, nonprofit, and civic leaders gathered for Cumberland Region Tomorrow's fourth County Conversation on July 13 as part of Franklin Tomorrow's FrankTalks series, creating an engaging dialogue about the opportunities and challenges facing Williamson County and the broader Middle Tennessee region.

We are deeply grateful to Franklin Tomorrow, especially Mindy Tate and Sarah Johnson, for partnering with us to make this conversation possible. We also extend our thanks to Alan Thompson, Cumberland Region Tomorrow's Board Chair, for representing CRT with thoughtful leadership and guiding a meaningful discussion about the importance of regional collaboration.

The conversation began with an overview of Cumberland Region Tomorrow's mission to inspire responsible growth through education, conversation, and collaboration, highlighting the reality that no county succeeds in isolation. As Alan shared, workforce, housing, transportation, infrastructure, healthcare, and economic development all cross county lines, making regional partnerships more important than ever.

Participants then shared their perspectives through live polling and discussion. When asked what the rest of Middle Tennessee should better understand about Williamson County, attendees emphasized that the county is far more diverse than many assume. Responses highlighted collaborative leadership, thoughtful planning, a commitment to preserving community character, strong schools, and the reality that Williamson County faces many of the same challenges as neighboring communities—including affordable housing and cost of living.

When asked which issues cross county lines and most affect their businesses and families, several clear themes emerged. Transportation, traffic congestion, housing affordability, workforce challenges, and infrastructure dominated the discussion, reinforcing that these issues cannot be solved by one community alone and require regional solutions.

Finally, participants reflected on what makes Williamson County special. The strongest themes were excellent schools, a strong sense of community, collaborative leadership, quality of life, educational opportunities, and civic engagement. 

The responses painted a picture of a community that values both growth and preservation—embracing opportunity while remaining committed to protecting the character and relationships that define Williamson County.

These County Conversations continue to reinforce an important truth: although each county has its own unique identity and priorities, the challenges shaping Middle Tennessee are shared. Cumberland Region Tomorrow is committed to creating spaces where leaders can learn from one another, build relationships, and work together toward thoughtful, responsible growth.

We look forward to continuing these conversations throughout all ten counties and carrying the insights gathered into the 2026 Power of 10 Summit on November 17, where regional leaders will come together around this year's theme, Growing Better Together: Aligning Infrastructure, Land Use, and Leadership.
